Apple Tree in the Philippines

Have you ever wish to have an apple tree in your backyard? Or is there anyone wish to have an apple tree in  the Tropics like Philippines? Being a tropical country is it really possible? Have you ever tried to grow apple tree from seeds collected from an apple? Well the answer is all Yes!

I still cant believe, that I actually got it to grow from the seed! Five years ago when I tried to grow and collect seeds from a grocery bought apple (fuji apple) the big, crispy juicy sweet variety. I successfully germinated the apple seed and now my 5 years old tree is growing and propagated 8 more trees through air layering.  Apple trees respond well to air-layering propagation. I planted those seeds and they germinated! Apple seeds need to experience a period of cold stratification before they will germinate. They receive that naturally if it’s left up to nature, in colder place in winter season.  Mature seeds sometimes dont need to be dried out before planting, I've just tried a few seeds and after some week it germinated thats become my first apple tree 5 years ago.  But a few weeks ago i have germinated seed from the inside of apple fruit itself (really germinated from the core of an apple)  I accomplished it by letting the fruit to stay about a week in the frige really no intention to propagated it but luckily when i checked and try to see if my apple still ok to eat, when I cut it in half the seeds already sprouting. It is germinated because of the same cold conditions for the seeds of an apple to grow.

Germinated seed from the core

Germinated seed

Gardening is one of my passion, that's why  I fascinated to try to grow apples here in the Philippines, got an apple tree obsession =)

Although my infatuation in growing apples is not only for their beautiful, delicious and healthful eating properties but how i successfully grown it in the Philippines, apple trees only have one purpose in growing them: propagation. Inside the core of each apple are tiny chambers, each bearing a single apple seed. Each apple is an apple tree's latest attempt at continuing its species. Apples that fall to the ground and wither away, uneaten, eventually deposit their seeds into the ground that’s where wild apple is around in some area with winter cold climate. Apples that are eaten inevitably have their seeds discarded in other ways, through which they may also find their way to fertile soil.

I’ve heard and read that the seeds of apples harvested from hybrid apples, can not produce the same fruit. Most of the fruit you get from the super market cannot produce a new tree with the same fruit variety when planted from the seed and sometimes wont even bear fruit. Still I’m really having a great time growing apple trees that might someday produce tiny purple apples or big peach-colored fuji apples or even a red and yellow, sweet and crisp apple much better than Red Delicious and Virginia Ralls Janet where fuji was cross pollinated. It may be a small or sour dud's and very disappointing apple , or it could be the next wonder apple someday.

My niece Marjoe love's green apple before,
(she do believes in fairy tale that red apples is poisonous in "Snowhite story =)
But now she do really loves any colored apple '',)

Marjoe standing besides our super loved apple tree =)

Genesis

11 Then God said, “Let the land sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” And that is what happened. 12 The land produced vegetation—all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.

    2. Hi Yuki,

Its difficult to grow apple from the "core" as what you are seeing at the picture. Besides, apples germinated from seed from this method are very weak. Try the other method hereunder :

      1. Get apple seeds from fresh apples and clean them. 2. Wrap each seed with moist cotton (drain excess water from the cotton) 3, Place all the wrapped apple seeds (looking like small "lumpia") inside an ice candy wrapper and seal it. 4. Place the wrapped apple seeds inside the refrigerator (in one of the compartments, maybe at the middle portion of the ref). Do not place it in front of the freezer or your seeds will be frozen. The apple seeds will germinate within 1 month or 5 weeks. You may also check the seeds after 2 weeks to see the development.

Once the seeds germinate, carefully remove them from the cotton and plant them in small pots with sterilized soil. Protect from direct sunlight and do not expose to rain. Do not over water your plants too.

Just send me a message later for follow up inquiries.

  2. Hi yuki you may possibly grow apple in your place once the apple plant been stable after germination just put something on cover like net for protection of your plant from insects or extreme wheather condition...its quit bit difficult to find germinated apple in core but you can try it :-)

    2. Hi Kathlene,

About 3 to 4 drops around the steam of the plant lng every morning and follow up with 3 drops after lunch ulit if nag dry up. The soil should just be moist (not so wet).

Allow the plant morning sunshine maybe until 8 ng umaga lng..it cannot endure too much sunlight pa. Protect it also from rain. It will take about 4 to 5 months na pwede na i transplant. I now have 4 three month old seedlings.

    3. Hi Kath,

Ganyan din nangyari sa mga tanim ko. Our friend Mikko advises watering 2 times per week lng with moderate quantity of water. Don't expose to sunlight after 9:30 AM, so intense heat for the plant. Meaning you need to find a place for your seedlings where sunlight is available until 9:30 AM only then it will be shaded after that. Larger plants say 3 to 4 months old can be exposed to sunlight or transferred to the filed.

    1. Hi Gaby,

It will take about ten years for apples grown from seeds to bear fruits. Yes its true an apple needs a pollinizer variety to pollinate its flowers and turn them into fruits. As to what variety to plant as pollinizer variety i recommend the granny smith variety or what is commonly called as the "green apple". It can pollinate any apple variety. It should be planted nearby, around 8 to 10 away from your original variety.

    1. Hi Lochinvar,

It is easy to grow apples from seeds. What is quite hard is to sustain its growth until its become hardy enough for transplanting at around 6 months old. Out of the ten seedling germinating from seeds about 3 to 4 will be strong enough until transplanting time. I think that's normal for a foreign variety in our country. The seedlings need to acclimatize (adjust to our cllimate) such that only the stronger seedlings survive. Just see my advise here to kathlene.

    1. Mikko Chiang,

Transplanting apple seedlings to the ground will depend on their growth. Based on my experience it would be better to retain the apple seedlings in pots for about 6 months to 1 year before transplanting them to the ground. The seedlings should first develop stronger root system before transplanting.

His plant is now two (2) years old.

  15. I'm not sure I can pull apple planting correctly as it too hot in here(where I live) but I do have some questions concerning apples.

Where do you people buy your apples; are you buy apples that is not poisoned spray(pesticides)? Also if you can deal with my ignorance - What is the difference between large sized apples and small sized ones? In groceries they usually are packed this way: large:4, medium:6, small:10 or higher.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear Zero Saber,

I usually buy medium to large sized fuji and granny smith apples (green variety) to have better germination result). Immediately after eating the apples, I clean the seeds wrap them individually in moist cotton and place all of them in plastic zip bags or in plastic or glass jars. I then place the plastic bag or jars in the compartment of refrigerator door (not on the freezer) and leave them there for about one month to one and a half month. After that period i open the cotton wrapped seeds and if I found the white roots emerging, I carefully unwrap the seeds and plant them on polybags with good quality soil. I burry the young roots on the soil but leave the seed just above the soil level. After about 2 to 3 days, the seed will fall down and young leaves will emerge. Place the young plants inside the greenhouse or equivalent shed to protect them from direct sunlight or possible rain until they become strong enough to be transplanted on the ground. It may take about 4 to 6 months before you can transplant them. I hope this information could help you.

    1. Congrats Ton Gab. Just persist on germinating more. Not all of those that germinated will survive. My experience is around 3 to 5 will survive out of the ten that sprouted.. Some will die due to over watering, some due to insect damage.. Small apple seedlings are very sensitive but when they reach about 3 months of age, they will survive.

    1. At times wilting is caused by soil born bacteria and fungus or micro pests such as small worms or slugs nibbling on the young stems of apple seedlings. In my case, I pour boiling water on the soil in flower pots or poly bags to kill soil borne bacteria and fungus, then allow the soil to cool before placing or planting the sprouted apple seeds.

Sa ngayon, nagpapausbong ako ng tangerines (ponkan), 1 and a half inch na ang laki nila. 9 out of 9 ang tumubo sa ponkan ko and hopefully successful yung paglabas ng third and fourth leaves nila.

If you fail the first time wag mabahala, pwedeng ulit ulitin hanggang maging successful. I failed a lot of times with my attempt to replicate the authors success in growing my own tree. I got more than 50 trees now all started from seeds and this blog helped me a lot with this first time venture. I already sold some of my trees sa mga interested neighbors.

    1. Hey Rommel here are some facts the you might want to know about apples. Apples will not grow true to seeds. Meaning you will not get fuji apples from fuji seeds. All fuji apples all over the world are clones from the original fuji tree. The same principle applies to all cultivars like anna and dorsett, pink lady, golden delicious etc. You can clone an apple to preserve its genetic material through air layering propagation or grafting. Apples are like humans, their offsprings won't look exactly the same as the parents. Apples will normally bear its first fruits within 5-7 years if grown from seeds. It's also not self fertile so you'll need another apple tree from a different variety for cross pollination to get apples. Given these facts it's still so much fun to grow your own apple tree. It'll be a priceless addition to your fruit tree collection in your backyard.

By the way salamat sa link that you've shared. Yes a handful of cultivars are considered self fertile or partially self fertile however having another tree to pollinate will significantly affect your harvest. Most commercial farms grow crab apples together with their apples for pollination to increase their yield. As per other literatures online there are also some apple varieties that grows true to seeds but since these exceptions are only applicable to a handful of varieties and since we are growing new apple trees from seeds with unknown characteristics then it is best to consider the general rule. At tsaka pala I think pwede mong pangalanan ang apple mo to any name that you want kasi walang ibang apple na katulad nyan sa boung mundo. Your apple is as unique as you and I.

  52. Salamat ton gab..
Isa nga palang babae from Grenada na nakapagpatubo at nakapagpabunga ng apple in only a year.

Check mo sya weekly thereafter.

nagtry akong mag germinate ng dalawang batch(about 8-10 seed each) mula pa nung December 18, 2015 tas nilagay ko sa fridge until now wala pang nagsprout.

Nagset ulit ako ng dalawang batch(10-15 seed each) nung January 4, 2016 pero di ko nilagay sa fridge then out of those 15+ seed eh iisa lang ang nagsprout... kaya yung batch na nilagay ko sa fridge eh nilabas ko na... Laking tuwa ko kahit iisa lang...

maggegerminate ulit ako bukas God willing then magoobserve pa ako. :D

    1. Your fridge maybe is too cold for the seeds to sprout.

Try replacing the paper towel with moist cotton,it works faster and you'll have better germination result.

    2. Got my 2nd seedling sprouted out of 18 seedlings..Started its germination process on January 19...

    3. Apple seeds (Fuji variety) need a minimum 8 weeks or more to germinate. Other varieties require 12 weeks minimum. Konting pasencya lang....

  56. I was able to germinate 19 Fuji seeds so far. About 4 seeds out of 10 seeds germinated. I live in Muntinlupa, Metro Manila.

  58. we also grew an apple tree!!!! it's barely 3 months..and at first we were a bit skeptic and we've been comparing pictures on the internet and i think we're finally confident to conclude it is an apple tree! now we know it's possible, because of your post. it's my Dad who actually first discovered it in our backyard and he's been somewhat obsessed with the idea of us having an apple tree. i must say, it made my 70-year-old Dad so happy! I hope our tree bears fruit someday and i hope my Dad will still be here to see it! I'm from Bacolod City by the way.

  63. Your apple will not bear the same fruit as the one you got from seed. It will flower and bear fruit, pero ito ay mapakla. You should get a scion from a known good fruit bearing apple tree and graft it to your tree as your root stock. For fuji it takes 5 years others 2 years to bear fruit. Also need a pollinator of different variety.

    1. I think walang available sa scion locally, kasi na saexperimental or non-commercial stage ang pagtatanim ng mansanas sa atin. I suggest you order a root stock abroad. At least, siguradong buhay. The root stocks can survive 2 weeks travel. I am thinking of doing the same thing.

  73. hi. usually yung bagong sprout na seedlings (or sometimes, yung nasa 7 inches na ang height), hindi nakaksurvive becuase of brown rot fungi infection. i usually spray my apple seedlings periodically with 1/3 milk and 2/3 water mixture to fight off this one pero its not 100% guarantee. yung sa roots, i mix 1 teaspoon pure honey with 1 liter water and water them with it because honey has antibacterial/antifungal properties. ill even spray the seedlings with the mixture to see whether it will help the plants fight off diseases.

  86. I germinated 3 seeds in just 2 days. Overnight in the fridge. 2nd day, I took it out and placed them somewhere cool and dark. On the 3rd day I planted them but only 2 survived. I don't know why they germinated that fast, my lemon seeds germinated after about 4th/5th day. Maybe I just got lucky. But who cares, I'm just really happy they're doing great at the moment and hoping for the best on the next minths and years of their precious life. BTW, im located in paranaque.
